One of the first artist voices I can remember being drawn to is that of George Michael. I would have been seven years old when I first heard “One More Try” on the radio, and vowing that I was going to figure out how to sing like that. Then he released “Listen Without Prejudice Vol. 1,” and I devoured it. Fast-forward twenty-seven years, when the Ubisoft team approached me to sing Wham!’s classic “Last Christmas” for their hit game “Just Dance 2017.” I was like, “YES, PLEASE!”
The goal, of course, was to create a track that sounds as close to the original as humanly possible. I’m much more familiar with George’s later catalogue, so it was a challenge to sound like a younger Wham!-era George — forcing me to sing more softly and lightly than I would for, say, “One More Try.” I had to avoid putting in too much of the throaty weight that I associate with his iconic tone. So here is the finished product, in all its mimicking glory. This is as close as my voice gets to early George Michael, and I hope at least a few people who buy “Just Dance 2017” won’t notice that this is actually a cover!
Thanks to Steve Ouimette for building an incredible track for me to sing over, and paying attention to every detail. Thanks again to the Ubisoft team for the chance to do this. And thank you, Mr. Michael’s record label, for not licensing this song, thereby giving me the chance to work on this fun project!
The game is out on October 25 in North/South/Central America, and October 27 in Europe/Middle East, October 28 in the UK.
